Who can pay with iDEAL
iDEAL is how most Dutch web shops, and many bills and Tikkie requests, are paid: you pick your bank, approve in its app, and the money leaves your account at once. You can only use it if your bank is an iDEAL issuer. The list on iDEAL's own site, last updated 16 April 2026, is: ABN AMRO, Adyen, ASN Bank, bunq, BUUT, FINOM, ING, Knab, Mollie, N26, Nationale-Nederlanden, Rabobank, RegioBank, Revolut, SNS Bank, Triodos, Van Lanschot Kempen and Yoursafe (iDEAL issuers, checked 5 Oct 2026).
So a non-Dutch account can work: Revolut is on the list as Revolut Bank UAB (Lithuania) and N26 as N26 Bank SE (Germany). Wise and Trade Republic are not on it, so you cannot pay with iDEAL from a Wise or Trade Republic account. A bank from your home country will not be on it either, unless it is one of the names above.
Revolut explains the steps: at checkout, choose iDEAL, then "Choose 'Revolut' from the list". It charges no fee for iDEAL and has a limit of €10,000 per transaction (Revolut help, checked 5 Oct 2026).
iDEAL is becoming Wero
iDEAL is being replaced by Wero, the payment system of the European Payments Initiative. Under iDEAL's plan the name became iDEAL | Wero from the first quarter of 2026, every shop that accepts iDEAL moves to Wero by the end of 2027 at the latest, and after that the iDEAL brand disappears step by step. iDEAL notes the plan is still subject to agreement with the regulator (iDEAL, "naar Wero", checked 5 Oct 2026). For you as a payer, nothing changes as long as your bank takes part: you still pick your bank and approve in its app.
Paying a Tikkie
Tikkie is ABN AMRO's app for payment requests: someone sends you a link and you pay your share. Tikkie says your friends pay a Tikkie "via hun eigen bank en iDEAL | Wero" (through their own bank and iDEAL | Wero), and to the question whether you can pay a Tikkie with a foreign bank account, it answers yes, if your bank supports iDEAL | Wero (Tikkie FAQ, checked 5 Oct 2026).
So you can pay a Tikkie from any bank on the iDEAL list above, Dutch or not. N26 confirms this for its customers: "You can currently only pay Tikkie requests" (N26 support, checked 5 Oct 2026).
Sending a Tikkie
Asking for money is stricter. Tikkie says you can use it when it supports your mobile number and your IBAN, because it has to be able to check your name and IBAN (Tikkie FAQ, checked 5 Oct 2026). You do not need to bank with ABN AMRO. A single request can be for at most €950, and you can receive at most €2,500 per 24 hours.
- N26: "Creating or sending Tikkie payment requests from an N26 account is not supported" (N26 support).
- Revolut: Revolut's help pages do not say whether you can send Tikkies from a Revolut account. Revolut is moving customers in the Netherlands to Dutch IBANs (Revolut help, checked 5 Oct 2026), so try it in the Tikkie app once your account has one.
- bunq and the Dutch banks give you a Dutch IBAN and are iDEAL issuers.
Payment requests are not covered by the EU ban on IBAN discrimination, so a payment app that only supports some banks breaks no rule (DNB, checked 5 Oct 2026). Salary and direct debits are different: see whether a company can refuse your foreign IBAN.
What to do if your bank is not on the list
- Open an account at a bank on the iDEAL list. Some open before you have a BSN: see opening a bank account without a BSN.
- Many web shops also take cards. A debit card from Revolut, N26 or bunq, or one of the credit cards we compare, works where cards are accepted; bunq against Revolut compares two of the debit cards.
- If a friend sends you a Tikkie and your bank is not an iDEAL issuer, ask for their IBAN and send a normal transfer instead.
